Samir Nasri offers to help Raheem Sterling silence 'stupid fans' following acrimonious move to Manchester City

Samir Nasri, no stranger to being targeted by opposition supporters himself, says he will help Raheem Sterling silence 'stupid fans' following his move to Manchester City.

The former Liverpool winger scored during his debut before City defeated Roma on penalties in the International Champions Cup in Melbourne - although he was jeered by a minority of supporters during the game.

Nasri rates Sterling as 'one of the hottest prospects in world football' and has backed the 20-year-old to prove his value following an acrimonious £49million transfer from Anfield.

'You always have stupid fans on a football pitch. The same thing happened to me when I left Arsenal. I just think you have to move on,' said Nasri after the game.

'He chose to come to Manchester City, they have to respect his decision. He's a young player, talented. Just let him play, he's going to show you how talented he is.'

'We didn't expect this - it's a game between AS Roma and Manchester City in Australia,' the Frenchman added.

'We didn't expect any other fans to be there. So it's a little surprise and weird. So if he needs any advice or anything about, he can come to ask me.'

Speaking of Sterling's well-taken goal after just three minutes, Nasri said : 'Of course, it's really good for his confidence, really good for the team.

'We know his first ball, there was booing by some fans. Then after three minutes he scores, so it was good for his confidence. We saw a little bit of what he can do for us. He can bring speed, skills. He should have had two penalties as well.'

The former France international also backed the club's new signing to make a difference in their bid to reclaim the Premier League  title, provided his price tag doesn't weigh him down.

'It depends how he adjusts to the squad, depends as well which system we are going to play,' he continued.
'If we play 4-3-3 he can bring us what he did tonight - speed, goals. He is one of the hottest prospects in world football. If the transfer [fee] is not too heavy, he can bring many, many things to the table.'

Kelechi Iheanacho ready to seize his first-team opportunity at Manchester City after impressive display against Roma

Raheem Sterling quicksilver start as Manchester City’s record £49million signing inevitably stole the headlines in their victory over Roma in Melbourne, but it overshadowed another impressive display from exciting teenage striker Kelechi Iheanacho.

The young Nigerian set up the goal for Sterling less than three minutes into the England international’s debut and then scored the second himself with a well-taken effort against the Italians at the MCG.

Iheanacho also shone on City’s tour of the United States 12 months ago, but did not obtain a work permit enabling him to play for their youth-team until earlier this year. Now manager Manuel Pellegrini is expected to underline his faith in the 18-year-old by drafting him into the first-team squad this season if Edin Dzeko and Stevan Jovetic leave the Etihad.

Iheanacho admitted that he is desperate to break into the senior side after once again proving that he can make an impact at the highest level.

He said: ‘The manager has promised me nothing. He’s just told me to keep working hard every day. So as yet I don’t know what my chance is, but I pray that it will come soon.

‘Last season, everything was okay. It was just about getting a work permit, but everything is sorted out now. I am able to play for Man City now.

‘It was nice to get a goal, I feel good about it. This season I hope to be here. I’ve been training hard with them during pre-season and I hope this is the time for me to break into the first-team.’

Iheanacho showed great vision to release Sterling for his debut goal against Roma before seizing on an awful back-pass by Ashley Cole early in the second half. Roma came back to tie the International Champions Cup game 2-2 but City won on a penalty shootout. Now Iheanacho wants another opportunity to play alongside Sterling against Real Madrid at the MCG on Friday.

He added: ‘When you are such an intelligent player like he is, it’s easy for us to play alongside him. It was an honour. He’s a very good player – intelligent, skilful and strong.

‘He’s a little bit older than me. I’m a young player still trying to make it so I hope I can learn some things from him.
‘It was a very good pass that I gave him for the goal. I thought it might have been offside actually but in the end it was a good run.

‘My goal was quite similar, and it was a good finish. I would like to play against Real Madrid now. It’s great for me to play at this level – this is the very top.’

Cristiano Ronaldo braved the cold Melbourne air and an ice bath on Wednesday as he and his Real Madrid team-mates stepped up their fitness ahead of match action.

Madrid face Manchester City on Friday and Rafa Benitez put his players through their paces at AAMI Park training ground ahead of the Champions Cup clash.

Arsenal target Karim Benzema and Manchester United target Sergio Ramos both trained, as did Gareth Bale who is likely to feature in the No 10 role for Madrid this coming season.

The outfield players started off their training session with a simple drill of ball control and simple passing before moving on to some higher intensity routines.

Madrid’s coaching staff later worked the squad on ball circulation and pressure drills before an intense match on a reduced pitch at the training ground.

Ronaldo and co are clearly closing in on peak fitness ahead of their upcoming clash with City but fans in Melbourne will be hoping the players are kept behind for some extra shooting practice.

Madrid have already been in action once during their time in Australia but their goalless draw against Roma didn’t do much to entertain the fans Down Under.

The Spanish side will also face Inter Milan on July 27 and AC Milan on July 30 while in Australia before they switch their attentions to the Audi Cup at the start of August.

Mario Balotelli's future in his own hands as Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers says it's up to the striker if he wants to fight

Brendan Rodgers has refused to give Mario Balotelli any assurances about his Liverpool future and said it is up to him whether he stays at Anfield.

The Italy striker – who fell foul of Liverpool fans on Twitter on Tuesday after sending a message of support to Raheem Sterling – has not travelled to South East Asia and Australia, as he has remained at Melwood with Jose Enrique and Fabio Borini, both of whom are surplus to requirements.

Liverpool would not stand in Balotelli’s way if they received a suitable offer but despite there being lots of reported interest from clubs in Italy, with Sampdoria the strongest link, they have not received a concrete offer for the 24-year-old, who has two years left on his contract.

Given that Rodgers has completely overhauled Liverpool’s forward line, with the arrival of Roberto Firmino and the imminent signing of Christian Benteke, there would appear little hope of Balotelli starting any games in the Barclays Premier League in the upcoming season.

Rodgers would not go as far as saying Balotelli, who cost Liverpool £16million, has no future but he made it clear that it is entirely down to the former AC Milan and Manchester City striker to decide whether he wants to remain at the club or seek a new challenge.

At a press conference in Kuala Lumpur on Wednesday, Rodgers said: ‘Mario is obviously not on tour but he is working hard and training well with a number of other players at Melwood.

'I’m not sure (whether he has a future), that will entirely be up to Mario. He is working hard to get fit and we will see when the season begins.’

Liverpool, who have won their three friendly games so far, conclude their tour on Friday with a game against a Malaysian XI and Rodgers – who once again would not comment on the imminent purchase of Benteke – is hopeful of a better campaign following a busy transfer window.

‘I think last season was a disappointment for us,’ said Rodgers. ‘We had to ensure we needed to bring in quality because we needed to improve.
'The quality and mentality of the player is important. I have an inherent belief that the players we have brought in will help us push on this season.

‘I think I’m firstly very happy with players we have brought in. We had to bring in quality and players with ambition. It is about focusing on players that are here and the players we have brought on.
'We are hopeful we can go on and be competitive this season and challenge on all fronts.’

Asked if he would make any more additions, Rodgers – who is looking at Paris Saint-Germain left back Lucas Digne – replied: ‘I am only interested in players that I currently have.
'It is not about players coming in, or going out, we're here to develop the fitness of players here and help them improve tactically.

‘Our ultimate goal has been develop the football fitness of the players. We are looking to improve the tactical idea of the team. It is to continually improve the dynamic and cohesion of the team.’

Los Angeles Galaxy 1-2 Barcelona: Luis Suarez embraces old Liverpool team-mate Steven Gerrard before making scoring return in front of record crowd in Pasadena

Just 46 days after he scored in Barcelona's Champions League final triumph, Luis Suarez picked up where he left off as the Treble winners opened their pre-season tour by beating Los Angeles Galaxy 2-1.

In front of a mammoth crowd of 93,226 in Pasadena, the European champions largely controlled their first outing of the season and Sergi Roberto scored what proved to be the winner in the 56th minute.

Although Tommy Meyer scored a consolation for the Major League Soccer side in injury-time, they were unable to alter the outcome of the match.

The vast crowd, a record for a club game involving an MLS team, were largely supporting Barcelona despite the absence of Lionel Messi and Neymar, granted extra time to recover from their efforts at the Copa America.

A smiling Suarez walked out at the Rose Bowl with the arm of former Liverpool team-mate Steven Gerrard wrapped around his neck and the pair exchanged shirts at the final whistle.

Only three players that played in the Berlin final - Suarez, Sergio Busquets and Ivan Rakitic - were included in Luis Enrique's line-up here, but a large chunk of the rest of his senior squad were involved.

Barca began strongly and the Galaxy received an early blow when Baggio Husidic limped off midway through the opening half. Sergi Roberto forced home goalkeeper Brad Rowe into a stop shortly afterwards.
It wasn't until the stroke of half-time that Barca's possession and pressure finally told but there was an element of controversy about Suarez's goal.

He appeared to block an attempted clearance by defender Leonardo with his arm before volleying the ball past Rowe.
Sergi Roberto doubled Barcelona's lead in the 56th minute, blasting home from about 12 yards after the ball broke loose.
Gerrard and striker Robbie Keane sat out the second half but Glaaxy's younger players still had an impact. Ariel Lassiter fired across goal from a difficult angle after Bradford Jamieson teed him up.

And Lassiter was clean through from Raul Mendiola's ball but couldn't convert a one-on-one opportunity.
They did pull a goal back through Meyer, whose powerful header went in off the post, but it was too late to change the outcome.

Barcelona now play Manchester United in their second International Champions Cup engagement in Santa Clara on Saturday.

San Jose Earthquakes 1-3 Manchester United: Two wins from two for Louis van Gaal's men on American tour as goals from Juan Mata, Memphis Depay and Andreas Pereira secure easy victory

San Jose Earthquakes 1-3 Manchester United: Juan Mata, Memphis Depay and Andreas Pereira
Juan Mata (No 8) is congratulated by his team-mates after giving Manchester United the lead after 30 minutes in San Jose

  • Manchester United claimed second win on their pre-season tour of the United States by beating San Jose 3-1
  • Juan Mata gave United the lead on the half-hour with angled shot from inside the box
  • Memphis Depay opened his account for the club shortly afterwards after seizing on a loose back pass
  • San Jose halved the deficit shortly before half-time through Fatai Alashe after sloppy defensive work
  • But a header from youngster Andreas Pereira ensured victory for Louis van Gaal's men at Avaya Stadium
  • Van Gaal's team take on Barcelona in next International Champions Cup match on Saturday

On pre-season tours, results are not generally important but impressions are. As such this has already been a useful exercise for Manchester United left back Luke Shaw.

One of the most memorable sights – if for the wrong reasons – of last summer’s trip to America was the sight of Shaw being run in to the ground by a United fitness coach as he was made to train separately from his team mates at Washington’s FedEx field.

It was the start of a struggle to win the affections and the appreciation of United manager Louis van Gaal. Maybe now, fully 12 months on, Shaw is finally getting somewhere.

Injury helped to ruin last season for Shaw. That wasn’t his fault. But this time round the 20-year-old arrived on tour on the back of some summer fitness work in Dubai and it would appear that he is feeling the benefit already.

Here in balmy San Jose, Shaw played for 45 minutes, like every other outfield player. In that time, though, he established himself as the best player on the field and provided something of an insight in to why United paid so much money for him last summer.

Certainly the opposition was not that clever here in California. As Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard are about to find out, the MLS scores highly on organisation, atmosphere, colour and competitiveness but low on quality.

Nevertheless, there was an eagerness and intelligence about Shaw’s play in a first half that United dominated that was hard to ignore. Full backs these days have to be among the most athletic players on the field, especially under the terms of Van Gaal’s ‘philosophy’, and Shaw’s efforts in the opposition half were impressive.

Until Morgan Schneiderlin erred in allowing San Jose to pull a goal back just before half-time, United had strolled through the first half. They looked a great deal more dangerous than they had in beating Club America in Seattle at the weekend and much of that threat came down the left where Shaw and Ashley Young combined regularly and effectively.

With Memphis Depay once again playing as a second striker behind Wayne Rooney, this quartet of players proved key.
Early on a run and shot from Depay brought a low save from San Jose goalkeeper David Bingham and Rooney narrowly failed to bundle home the rebound. Then a super combination between Young and Shaw allowed the left back to pull a ball back across goal that both Rooney and Depay narrowly failed to convert.

On another occasion Shaw reached the byline only to chip a cross tamely in to the goalkeeper’s arms at the near post. It was a rare error.

Bastian Schweinsteiger played the second 45 minutes as he did in the win over Club America at the weekend

With Juan Mata regularly drifting in from the right to add to the United threat on the other side, United were dangerous and cohesive. The only surprise was that it took them 32 minutes to score.

This time Shaw was not actually involved as Rooney dropped deep to pick up possession and played a perfect ball inside the San Jose right back to release Young. With Rooney and Depay breaking hard in to the penalty area, Young had some obvious options but was intelligent enough to look up and lay the ball back to Mata who was arriving in space just beyond the 18-yard line.

When the ball arrived at his feet, Mata also had options and it appeared as though the Spaniard was trying to find Depay in the middle with a clipped cross shot. Ultimately, though, the ball passed the end of Depay’s out stretched leg without taking a diversion and when it nestled in the far corner it was Mata’s goal.

With their resistance broken, San Jose needed to gather themselves but instead they self-combusted. Less than five minutes after the goal, Jean Baptiste Pierazzi tried to find team-mate Marvell Wynne with a back pass but Depay read it and stole in to stroke home the second goal – and his first for his new club – past a rather distressed looking goalkeeper.

MAN UNITED'S AMERICAN TOUR

July 18 Club America (Seattle) won 1-0
July 22 San Jose Earthquakes (San Jose)
July 25 Barcelona (Santa Clara) 9pm BST
July 30 Paris Saint-Germain (Chicago) 2am BST
Even with so long left the game looked won. Indeed before half-time Mata could have scored twice more, one shot coming back off a defender with United screaming for handball and another being repelled by the goalkeeper’s instep.

As it was, though, the Earthquakes were offered a lifeline when Schneiderlin fell asleep close to his own goal and Shea Salinas waltzed past him to set up a simple goal for Fatai Alashe.

Van Gaal would have taken a dim view of that goal and doubtless his new midfield signing from Southampton will reflect on that anxiously ahead of United’s next game against Barcelona in Santa Clara this weekend.

Into the second half, though, and a totally new United line-up edged clear of their hosts on the hour mark. This time the goal came from the right as one young prospect, Jesse Lingard, dropped a cross on to the head of another, Andreas Pereira, and the Brazilian finished it neatly from 10 yards.

In truth, United couldn’t bring the impetus and rhythm of the first half to their game in the second. It had been this way on Friday in Seattle also. As such, there was less to admire as United went about the business of closing out the game effectively rather than aggressively.

Van Gaal, though, will be pretty pleased with what he has seen from most of his players out here so far. Bastian Schweinsteiger has been slow to find his feet while Marouane Fellaini will feel unfortunate not to have seen a moment’s action so far.

In Depay and Shaw, however, Van Gaal will have observed two players who look ready for the Barclays Premier League season to start tomorrow. This was an impressive night for both.

Liverpool's new £29million signing Roberto Firmino arrived at the club's Melwood training ground for the first time to prepare for his maiden season in England.

The Brazilian playmaker, a summer capture from Hoffenheim, posed with his new No 11 shirt as he got to grips with life on Merseyside.

Firmino did not travel with his new team-mates on the pre-season tour to the Far East and Australia as he was a central part of his native Brazil's Copa America side.

Instead he is bidding to get fit ahead of the new season by training alongside countryman Philippe Coutinho and outcasts Mario Balotelli, Fabio Borini and Jose Enrique.

Firmino was snapped leaving his Liverpool hotel on his way to training on Wednesday morning after being spotted signing shirts for fans eager to get a glimpse of their new hero.

The 23-year-old will have to step into the shoes of Raheem Sterling, who left Merseyside under a cloud for Manchester City to the tune of £49million.

Reds boss Rodgers, however, feels his new capture is more than up to the task of injecting new verve into the Anfield attack.

He said: 'The flexibility of the player is important. He's an outstanding talent.
'He's got a wonderful touch and appreciation for the game, but the key when you watch him is the determination, how hard he works.

'So he can play on either one of the sides, he can play through the middle, or he can play in behind.
'He's accustomed to European football so that should make the transition a little bit easier for him. But he's a talented player who wants to score a goal.'

Firmino will be joined in the Liverpool attack by Christian Benteke.

And next up at Melwood could be Paris Saint-Germain left back Lucas Digne. Rodgers wants the French star to bolster his defence with the jury still out on Alberto Moreno.
Rodgers' side have been putting their pre-season opponents to the sword in encouraging early signs for last season's fifth-placed side.

An opening 4-0 win against the Thai All-Stars was followed by a 2-1 triumph against Brisbane Roar and a 2-0 victory over Adelaide United.

Firmino's fellow new signings James Milner and Danny Ings have been among the goals as Liverpool continue to wow their legions of foreign fans.
