Floyd Mayweather is a heavier favourite than the US to beat the Isle of Wight at basketball... so why is the Money Man fighting Andre Berto in his in ring finale?

Floyd Mayweather opened in Las Vegas at 1-60 and has not fallen below that proposition, while rising quickly through 1-80 at the MGM Grand casino and, at its most prohibitive, to a colossal 1-180.

He is a heavier favourite than the United States to beat the Isle of Wight at basketball and we might easily come to the point where we will need to lay out a thousand dollars to win a single buck.

So why, pray, has he chosen Berto, the loser of three of his last six fights, as the opponent for what he continues to insists will be his ring finale?

Mayweather, who shared pictures of him training, is an overwhelming favourite to beat lowly Berto

The most obvious reason was revealed by his father and trainer, Floyd Snr, when he said: ‘My boy has earned the right to an easy ride into retirement.’

But the waters run deeper than that, as they always do with Floyd Jnr.

Yes, he is hell-bent on equalling Rocky Marciano’s half-a-century old record of retiring unbeaten on 49-0.
Yes again, the odds are monumentally against Berto upsetting that calculation.

Yet, even in the case of this opponent, there is more to it than that.

FLOYD MAYWEATHER

Mayweather is the WBC, WBA, and Ring welterweight champion.
He beat Manny Pacquiao on points in his last fight in May.

ANDRE BERTO

NICKNAME: The Beast
RECORD
Total fights: 33

Losses: 3
STANCE: Orthodox

He is the WBA welterweight interim champion but has lost three of his last six fights.
He held a 27-0 record until being beaten by Victor Ortiz in 2011.

To begin with, even though Mayweather keeps insisting this will be his last fight, by no means everyone believes him.
What is for certain is that this is the last of the six fights which comprise his mega-bucks deal with the Showtime cable network in America.

And guess what? The MGM are opening a new, bigger, even more glittering arena on the Vegas Strip next spring.
Should he decide to try to trump Marciano with win No 50, what better place or more glamorous occasion?
Factor in that he would be able to auction those TV rights for that comeback to the highest bidder.
Then guess who the opponent would be? Why not Manny Pacquiao?

While it may not be possible to equal the record half-a-billion dollar earnings from their first fight this May – especially given the chronic let down in the ring action after all the hype – the rematch would certainly gross more than any other bout.
If they only pulled in half those 4.4million viewers at half the $100 pay-per-view charge, they would rake in something in the region of $250 million (£160m) from US television alone.

Impossible? Not once the propaganda machines reminds us that the PacMan had a busted shoulder, so at the second attempt this really will be The Fight of the Century.

Given that scenario, Mayweather needs not only the inevitable win over Berto but to look great in the process.
Come in Mr Berto.

While he is not ranked among the top ten by any of the governing bodies, this two-time former world welterweight belt-holder in decline is stylistically the ideal challenger as far as the current supreme champion is concerned.

Berto does come to fight. He is an aggressive, foot forward boxer who is tailor-made for Floyd the counter-puncher. Even more so because he not only leaves himself wide open but has little or no evasive head movement.

Mayweather can expect to have fun picking him off all night.
Shrewd publicist that he is, Mayweather delayed the announcement to the last possible moment.

This not only reduces the time for criticism of this choice but lets him get to work on selling the event.

Attention will shift quickly to the supposed bad blood between him and Berto, once a friend but who claims now he is the victim of harassment phone calls from Mayweather over their mutual interest in a young lady.

Will the public buy it? A month from now, you bet?
Of course there have to be losers.
Amir Khan, for the third time, is prominent among them.

Mayweather has been trying to sell the fight as a grudge match over mutual interest in the same young lady
Mayweather has been trying to sell the fight as a grudge match over mutual interest in the same young lady

This time camp Mayweather let it slip that they had passed on Khan yet again because he kept calling out and insulting their man.
Khan got the message, albeit too late. He says: ‘I’m disappointed but Floyd has fought the biggest names throughout his career and earned the right to face whoever he chooses.

‘There are many big fights out there for me. I have seen how hard Andre Berto works and I wish my stable-mate and our trainer, Virgil Hunter, the best of luck. They will give Floyd a very tough fight.’

Khan’s belief that his speed could seriously threaten Mayweather looks as if it will never be tested. Not with Berto on deck next month and Pacquaio available if required next May for what really would be Floyd’s farewell.
Mayweather is also pulling through the MGM turnstiles the usual cross-Atlantic throng of British fans by topping his undercard with a third attempt by George Groves to win a world super-middleweight title. After two K0s by fellow Englishman Carl Froch, St George gets an easier-looking shot at Sweden’s Las Vegas-based WBC champion Badou Jack.

The main event will be more a celebration and acclamation of the career of the best fighter of his generation, whether or not an instant comeback is in waiting in the wings.
Of course a more menacing opponent would have been preferable.

So, again, why is he taking Berto?
Because the Money Man can.

Lionel Messi headbutts Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa before scoring just seven minutes later as Barcelona beat Roma 3-0 in 'friendl

Lionel Messi narrowly escaped being sent off after headbutting Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa as Barcelona's friendly with Roma became anything but friendly on Wednesday night.

Roma knew they were in for a frustrating evening at the Nou Camp chasing the shadows of the European champions and after going 1-0 down to Neymar's opener, French international Mapou lost his temper with Messi leaning his head in towards the Barcelona No 10 and making clear contact.

Messi responded by butting the French defender and grabbing him by the throat. The Spanish referee Javier Estrada Fernandez could easily have sent both players off - Mapou for the original aggression and Messi for the retaliation but instead showed the pair yellow cards and the game continued 11 against 11.

Alessandro Florenzi was then booked for going cynically through the back of Neymar and Radja Nainggolan made it a hat-trick of cautions for the visitors in the first half when he went into the book for complaining.

But it was impossible for things to turn too ugly as Barcelona produced some of the beautiful football that won them the Treble last season to beat Rudi Garcia's team.

Their second goal was picture book with Luis Suarez dribbling in from the right past Vasilis Torosidis and feeding Dani Alves who teed-up Neymar.

He laid the ball off to Messi who found the corner with a vicious curling shot.
That doubled Barca's lead after the Brazilian had opened on the scoring on 26 minutes.

Messi's long diagonal ball was nudged into Neymar's path by Jeremy Mathieu.

The French centre back, playing at left back in the first half, had shown a delicate first touch and when the twinkle-toed Brazilian took over there was only going to be one end result.

Neymar rounded Roma keeper Wojciech Szczesny after the Arsenal loanee had gone to ground and Barca had their opener.

With the score still at 2-0 on the hour Barca coach Luis Enrique made a raft of changes and Manchester United target Pedro was one of seven players to come on.

This was potentially his last Nou Camp appearance in a Blaugrana shirt but there was no sign of any special treatment.

He was left out of the starting line-up and only came on as Suarez, Messi and Neymar came off reaffirming his second-class status in Barca's forward line.

There were some chants of his name when he was presented to the crowd along with the rest of the squad before the game started but there was no smile from the former youth team player who will leave having served the club for a decade if as expected he completes his move next week after Barcelona's European Super Cup final against Sevilla.
He didn't take long to get involved tricking his way down the left and drilling a cross into Roma's six-yard box.
That provoked more chants of his name but it seems to be Pedro's fate at Barca to always be in the shadow of another player and within seconds the homage was drowned out by cheers as Ivan Rakitic hammered in the third with a shot from all of 30 yards.

Despite running out comfortable winners in what was the 50th Gamper Trophy - Barcelona's traditional friendly curtain raiser in honour of the club's founder - there was a price to pay with Neymar finishing the game with ice on his knee and left back Jordi Alba hobbling down the tunnel with what appeared to be a hamstring problem having come on at half-time.

As Chelsea push to retain their Premier League title... here are five key questions that face Jose Mourinho and the champions

Jose Mourinho has challenged his Chelsea side to be even better than last season and retain the Premier League title.
The Blues have a relatively unchanged squad while their closest rivals have strengthened, but will still be the favourites going into the 2015-16 campaign.

So, ahead of their opener against Swansea, Sportsmail asks five questions facing Mourinho as he aims for further glory at Stamford Bridge.

With Diego Costa's injury concerns, can Radamel Falcao or Loic Remy step up?
There is no doubting Spain international Costa's talent - he scored 20 goals in just 26 appearances in his debut Premier League season. But will his recurring injuries hamper the champions' chances?

Chelsea look at their menacing best with even a half-fit Costa leading the line, and Mourinho has admitted he is concerned about the striker and doesn't know if he will be fit for the Premier League opener.

Radamel Falcao was brought in to help Loic Remy provide back-up to Costa, but there now seems to be a lot of pressure on the former Manchester United misfit to hit the ground running.

Chelsea's pre-season form was poor - does that mean anything?
Yes, it is only pre-season and the Chelsea boss may have described the 1-0 defeat by Fiorentina as 'another good training session', but the Blues have yet to win one of their five friendlies in normal time, managing just 16 shots on target.

Last season, Mourinho's men started strongly with seven victories in 10.
Is pre-season form crucial? Probably not. Would Jose be saying it was if his side were winning? Absolutely.

Is there enough strength in depth without more signings?
Chelsea currently have five senior defenders in the squad; Branislav Ivanovic, John Terry, Gary Cahill, Kurt Zouma and Cesar Azpilicueta.

That explains the current interest in John Stones and Baba Rahman, but Mourinho has said that 'the transfer window is over' for him.

There could also be concerns about squad depth should Nemanja Matic or Cesc Fabregas get injured, as well as a certain star...

Is there too much reliance on Eden Hazard?
Hazard is the second-best player in the world behind only Lionel Messi, according to his manager, and the PFA Premier League player of the year was superb last season.

It's no wonder that Chelsea base a lot of their game plan around the Belgian winger, and though he has avoided injury in recent years, a long-term absence this season could be catastrophic for Chelsea.

Oscar and Willian work well with Hazard but aren't individual match winners, while Juan Cuadrado has yet to settle in English football.

Will youngsters be given a chance?
While players such as Patrick Bamford, Lewis Baker and Mario Pasalic have departed on loan, Chelsea still have talented starlets from an all-conquering youth side in their ranks.

Mourinho hasn't relied much on youngsters in the past and his criticism of promising midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek at the end of last season was damning.

What's more, Bertrand Traore played up front at Vitesse last season only to be placed at left back at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday. Does Jose trust them?

Radamel Falcao praises 'friendly' Chelsea team-mates for helping him find a new home as he settles into London after loan move

Radamel Falcao believes the good atmosphere within the Chelsea dressing room has helped him adjust to his new surroundings quickly.

The Colombia striker, who endured a miserable loan spell at Manchester United last season, joined Jose Mourinho's side on a temporary deal from Monaco early last month.

And after making his first appearance at Stamford Bridge in a blue shirt against Fiorentina, the 29-year-old admitted that his team-mates have made it easy for him to settle in.

'The atmosphere in the squad here is very good, they are very friendly with me and everybody gave me a big welcome,' he told chelseafc.com.

'It helped to go away on tour with my new team-mates and since we returned to London we haven't had a lot of free days, but some players have been helping me to get to know the city and helping me to look at houses so I am grateful to them for their help.'

The former Atletico Madrid and Porto forward only managed four Premier League goals for United last term but he is confident that his game will improve the more he plays under Mourinho.

He added: 'It's a lot more physical here than anywhere else in Europe.

'Maybe the football philosophy is a little different here in that it is always about getting the ball forward and there is less time when teams are just trying to control the ball and take the heat out of the game.

'Once you get to know your team-mates, you all know when it is the right time to put your foot on the ball and take the heat out of the game and when it is the right time to go forward, all out.'

Angel di Maria transfer confirmed by PSG as Manchester United flop finally completes £44m move

Angel di Maria has finally been confirmed as a Paris Saint-Germain player after the French giants bid the the Argentine winger 'bienvenido' (welcome) on their official Twitter account.

Di Maria had already told of his joy at joining the Ligue 1 champions and has spoken of his desire to go all the way in the Champions League after a tumultuous year with Manchester United.

The Argentinian completed what has been a drawn-out £44.3million move from Old Trafford and is set to be unveiled at a press conference at 5.30pm on Thursday.

On Thursday afternoon, United announced Di Maria had completed his move to the French champions.
United tweeted: '#mufc can confirm the sale of Angel Di Maria to Paris Saint-Germain is complete. We wish him well for the future.'

Di Maria, who has been handed the No 11 shirt, is the latest in a long line of South American signings made by PSG since their takeover by a group of wealthy Qataris four years ago.

The five-time French champions have now signed David Luiz, Lucas Moura, Javier Pastore, Edinson Cavani and Thiago Silva as they look to make PSG genuine contenders for the Champions League.

'We are very proud that Angel di Maria has chosen Paris Saint-Germain,' PSG president Nasser Al Khelaifi said.
'He is an incredibly talented player, with a frightening speed and ability to beat opposition players.
'He adds his name to the club's strong South American community and, above all, the big Paris Saint-Germain family.

'By signing Angel di Maria, Paris Saint-Germain is once again showing the club's constant ambition to reach the summits of the European game.'

The sale of Di Maria means United's famous number seven shirt becomes available for the new season.

Summer signing Memphis Depay is favourite to take the shirt given that he wore it during his time at PSV Eindhoven.

United manager Louis van Gaal, meanwhile, will now look to bolster his squad by signing Barcelona forward Pedro.

Pedro has enjoyed 11 successful years at Barca, but has become frustrated at a lack of playing time at the Nou Camp recently following the signing of Neymar and Luis Suarez, who have formed a deadly three-pronged attack alongside Lionel Messi.

If Barca president Josep Bartomeu gets his way, Pedro will not be leaving the club, however.
'There is nothing on Pedro, there isn't any official offer (on the table),' Bartomeu was quoted as saying in Marca.

Pedro came off the bench to play the final 29 minutes of Barcelona's 3-0 friendly win over Roma at the Nou Camp on Wednesday night.

Di Maria had told BeIN Sports: 'I am very happy to join PSG. What I know about PSG is that it is a team that won all the possible trophies in France last season.

'This is very important for the club. I also know that I want to overcome the obstacle that is the quarter finals of the Champions League. I am going to try to bring the best of my abilities to put myself at the service of this team.
'We are going to try and go as far as possible in the Champions League.'

United signed Di Maria from Real Madrid for a British record £59.7million last summer, but after an impressive start, his form dipped and he only started one of the final 10 games of last season.

The total sum of the winger's transfers has topped the £132m mark following his move.
That would rank the United flop as the most expensive player of all time, taking into account the cumulative values of his transfers.

Di Maria did not join United's pre-season tour of the United States after appearing at the Copa America in Chile where Argentina lost the final to the hosts in a shootout.

Paul Pogba set to brush off Premier League interest and stay at Juventus having landed the prestigious No 10 shirt in Turin

Juventus' in demand star Paul Pogba has given the biggest hint yet he will remain at the Serie A club after accepting the famous No.10 shirt for the upcoming season.

The France international has attracted the attention of the top-spending clubs across Europe this summer having become an integral part of Juventus' midfield with exemplary performances.

However despite interest from Barcelona, Manchester City and Chelsea this transfer window, Pogba appears to be staying in Turin. 'It's an honour to wear the number 10 shirt after so many great Juventus players of the past,' said Pogba.

Meanwhile Juventus boss Massimiliano Allegri added: 'Pogba asked for the number 10 in order to have greater responsibility, because wearing that shirt isn't easy.

'I think Pogba works best as an inside midfielder. Perhaps in a few years he'll operate in front of the defence.'
Juventus will be delighted to have seemingly fended off bids for Pogba as the 2014 Serie A and Coppa Italia double champions prepare for the Suoercoppa Italia against league runners-up Lazio on Saturday.

Allegri's side will be making a record 11th appearance, seeking to win a seventh cup.
