Maria Sharapova seals pathway to round two of Wimbledon 2015 following straight sets win over Brit Johanna Konta

Johanna Konta came to Centre Court on Monday hoping that her rich run of recent form might allow her to catch Maria Sharapova cold.

But the steely Russian brought her best game to the first round encounter, defeating the British No 2 6-2 6-2 in an hour and 22 minutes

Sharapova had not played since losing in the fourth round of the French Open, while Konta has reeled off seven victories over world top 100 players since the grass court season started.

The British No 2 battled bravely at SW19 but fell to a straight sets defeat to the Russian

But the world No 4 managed to prevent the Centre Court crowd getting behind the Eastbourne-based Konta by fighting off her early challenge and then asserting her authority.

Sharapova has been in London training for nearly two weeks and looked very attuned to the surface. 

She was especially punishing on the return of serve against Konta, who relaxed before the match by attending the Taylor Swift concert in Hyde Park on Saturday night.

The 24-year-old world number 148, whose form has been far above that, started promisingly and forced a break point in the first two Sharapova service games. 

But her failure to do so frustrated her, and two poor games quickly saw her fall back to 4-1 behind, from where she could not recover, despite breaking at the start of the second set.

It has been a very good few weeks for Konta, who is on course to make the top 100 again, while Sharapova has shown that she will be a force to be reckoned with here at SW19.

Given the flurry of deals already done and the constant grinding of the rumour mill, it will come as a surprise to many that the transfer window isn't even open yet.

The official start to the summer's wheeling and dealing is at 12am on Wednesday (July 1), meaning all the paperwork can then be properly completed and submitted to the authorities.

The window will remain open until the earlier time of 6pm on Tuesday September 1 when it will 'slam shut' amid the hurly-burly of deadline day.

This hasn't stopped the Premier League's leading lights trying to gain a head-start in the negotiations however.

And so, as we approach the start of the transfer window, we take a look at the deals already done, those in progress and the others likely to happen for the big six clubs.

MANCHESTER UNITED

Who's in? Louis van Gaal wasted no time in completing a £25m move for PSV Eindhoven and Holland winger Memphis Depay, stealing in late in the day to pinch his compatriot from the clutches of Paris Saint-Germain.

Who's out? Tom Cleverley, having spent the last year on loan at Aston Villa, snubbed a permanent move and joined Everton on a free transfer instead. Back-up goalkeeper Ben Amos and young defender Tom Thorpe were also released.

Business to be done 

There will be plenty more comings and goings at Old Trafford this summer as Van Gaal searches for the missing links in a squad that fell considerably short of a title challenge last season. 

A commanding defensive midfielder is the main priority to reduce United's reliance on the ageing Michael Carrick, with the club in pole position to sign Southampton's Morgan Schneiderlin in a £25m deal. 

Van Gaal may also try and tempt Bastian Schweinsteiger away from Bayern Munich with the promise of more regular football.

A centre-back is another priority, with United frequently weak in defence last season. However, attempts to sign Sergio Ramos from Real Madrid are likely to be hindered by his £65m price tag. 

Consequently, United are digging in their heels over goalkeeper David de Gea's switch to the Bernabeu.

United have also identified the Everton right-back Seamus Coleman as a target.

LIVERPOOL

Who's in? Chastened by last season's disappointing sixth-placed finish, Brendan Rodgers has wasted no time in signing reinforcements, with five men already through the door. 

The most eye-catching is the Brazilian forward Roberto Firmino, bought from Hoffenheim for £29m. He is the club's second most expensive signing ever after £35m Andy Carroll. 

Firmino will link up in attack with Danny Ings, whose transfer fee from Burnley is to be decided by tribunal but likely to be around £5m.

Also in are Charlton's 18-year-old defender Joe Gomez (£3.5m), England midfielder James Milner from Manchester City (free) and Hungarian goalkeeper Adam Bogdan (free).

Who's out? Captain and club legend Steven Gerrard has departed for Los Angeles Galaxy in the MLS, while Glen Johnson and Brad Jones were released.

Business to be done 

Nathaniel Clyne is almost certain to become Liverpool's sixth summer acquisition when he undergoes a medical on Monday. The England right-back is set to wrap up a £12.5m move from Southampton.

It remains to be seen whether Liverpool can hold on to England star and prize asset Raheem Sterling, with their resolve tested by Manchester City's offer of £50m. 

With Liverpool already happily splashing the cash on new signings, many are suggesting they are bracing themselves for Sterling's departure, no doubt after a little more transfer window drama.

CHELSEA

Who's in? Having dominated the Premier League last season, there is less urgency for Chelsea to strengthen but they have added 19-year-old Brazilian midfielder Nathan, who arrived from Atletico Paranaense for £4.5m.

Who's out? Legend Didier Drogba was released at the end of the season, midfielder Gael Kakuta moved to Sevilla in a £2.5m deal after five years of loan spells. 21-year-old Thorgan Hazard, brother of Eden, made his loan spell at Bundesliga club Borussia Monchengladbach permanent.

Business to be done

There will almost certainly be further dealings at Stamford Bridge as Jose Mourinho chases the additions needed to turn Chelsea into Champions League challengers. 

There remains speculation that Chelsea could throw Radamel Falcao a lifeline despite his terrible season at Manchester United and anonymous Copa America with Colombia. 

19-year-old forward Kenedy could be the second Brazilian talent through the door if the Blues can secure a work permit to seal his £6.3m switch from Fluminense. 

Another target is the Ghana and Augsburg left-back Baba Rahman - Chelsea have offered £10.7m but the Bundesliga side want nearer £15m for the 20-year-old.

ARSENAL

Who's in? The Gunners have yet to sign anyone this summer but the £11m arrival of Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech is imminent.

Who's out? The injury-plagued Abou Diaby has been released, while Japan winger Ryo Miyaichi has joined German second division side St Pauli after failing to make the cut.

Business to be done

Arsene Wenger is reportedly closing in on the signing of Arturo Vidal, the Chile and Juventus midfielder who has been impressive at the Copa America. 

His acquisition would be a good one for Arsenal and boost their chances of sustaining a Premier League title charge. 

With Cech's arrival, it appears David Ospina could be on his way out of the club.

MANCHESTER CITY

Who's in? Nobody as yet.

Who's out? Manuel Pellegrini has trimmed his squad, with the departures of Scott Sinclair to Aston Villa (£2.5m), James Milner to Liverpool (free), Matija Nastasic to Schalke, Dedryck Boyata to Celtic, Micah Richards to Aston Villa and John Guidetti, who was released.

Business to be done

City's pursuit of Raheem Sterling looks set to be the transfer saga of the summer, with City contemplating upping the bidding to £50m for the England whizzkid, whose representatives seem adamant he will be moving away from Anfield.

Liverpool for their part are exceedingly reluctant to lose their star man and it could well take an offer well in excess of £50m to spirit him away. 

City, who are actively trying to increase their quota of English talent, have also been linked with an £8m move for Aston Villa's Fabian Delph. 

They are also looking to the future with the signing of Fulham's Patrick Roberts for £10m and young Turkish striker Enes Unal from Bursaspor.

TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR

Who's in? Mauricio Pochettino moved early in the summer to bolster the Spurs defence, with right-back Kieran Trippier coming in from relegated Burnley for £3.5m and centre-back Kevin Wimmer joining from Cologne for £4.3m.

Who's out? Veteran goalkeeper Brad Friedel, 44, announced his retirement at the end of the season.

Business to be done

Spurs have been linked with quite a few players, including Monaco pair Geoffrey Kondogbia, who joined Inter Milan, and Anthony Martial, who signed a new contract. 

They have also been linked to the Dnipro star Yevhen Konoplyanka though they face stiff competition for his signature, not least from Atletico Madrid.

Petr Cech has been unveiled by Arsenal after Arsene Wenger finally made his long-term target their first summer signing for £10million from Chelsea.

The Czech Republic goalkeeper passed his medical at Arsenal on Friday morning after Sportsmail revealed he had agreed to sign for Chelsea's rivals on Wednesday.

Arsenal boss Wenger told the club's official website that he was 'very pleased' to have signed 'one of the outstanding keepers in the world.'

'Petr Cech is a player that I have admired for a long time and I am very pleased that he has decided to join us,' said Wenger. 'He has proven over many seasons that he is one of the outstanding keepers in the world and he will add great strength to our squad.'

Cech explained that it was Wenger's ambition, and the promise of first-team football, that attracted him.

I thought this would never happen but it is time for me to say goodbye to Chelsea Football Club. The club I have lived every single minute for since joining in July 2004, the club in which I thought I'd hang my gloves and boots one day and finish my career. But life doesn't always turn out the way you think it will.

Since 2004 it has been an incredible journey with so many highs and not many lows. We have managed to win every single English trophy as well as the Europa League and the biggest of all - Champions League. 

Looking back at all the achievements, including our first ever league double in 2010, back to back titles in 2005 and 2006, and multiple EPL and FA cup wins, I couldn't be more proud!! As a team we made history together!!

Last summer, things changed and I understood I was no longer the 1st choice keeper but I felt it was not the right time for me to go.

During the season it became clear that my situation would not improve and as I know I am not at the stage of my career where I want to be on the bench, I made my decision to move on and look for new challenges.

The limited playing time gave me the chance to refresh and rest mentally as well as make me realise just how much I enjoy playing football at the highest level, because I missed it badly and every game day I was not involved. 

I have the same commitment to football, the same motivation, and the same hunger for success as I had at the beginning of my career, and I love the challenges brought by the top quality players you face while playing the Premier League - simply the best and the most challenging league in the world.

That's why I spoke to Mr Abramovich about me staying in the Premier League and I'd like to thank him from the bottom of my heart for his support in this matter. It means so much to me because without him Chelsea Football Club would not be where it is now. He deserves huge credit for what he has done for the club and for all of us.

Cech attracted interest from Paris Saint-Germain but wanted to stay in London where his family are settled, and Arsenal have finally landed their man despite Jose Mourinho's reluctance throughout.

'My own opinion is that we will probably see, for one reason or another, Cristiano move from Madrid before Gareth,' Toshack said.

'You do need time to adapt and obviously for the money they paid for Bale and at the age that he is, he's still got a lot to do. I hope Gareth will get the opportunity to play in an area of the field where he can do most damage.

'I'm not so sure wide is Gareth's best position. I think Cristiano has got a bit do with that. He was always a No 7 but likes to play left side and I think Gareth suffers a bit for that.'
